How Do You Get to Niseko from New Chitose Airport or Sapporo?
This guide is for first-time visitors who land at New Chitose Airport, or start in Sapporo, and need to reach Niseko Town or Kutchan Town. It compares three ways in: JR trains with a change at Otaru, the Chuo Bus highway bus from Sapporo, and the reservation-only winter ski buses.
Everything here comes from pages run by the airport, the transport operators, and the two towns. We read them on 4 October 2026. Several of these pages still described last winter when we checked, so treat every time and fare below as a snapshot and check the operator page before you travel.
The three routes at a glance
- Train: JR from the airport to Otaru, then a change to a local train toward Kutchan and Niseko. Niseko Town warns that trains on the Otaru side are few, so connections need care.
- Highway bus from Sapporo: the Chuo Bus Kosoku Niseko service runs from Sapporo through Otaru and Kutchan to Niseko. Chuo Bus gives the trip as about 3 hours 5 minutes.
- Winter ski bus: reservation-only buses between New Chitose Airport or Sapporo and the Niseko ski areas, run by Chuo Bus in winter only.
Leaving New Chitose Airport
The airport says New Chitose Airport Station is reached directly from the basement floor of the terminal building. It gives JR Sapporo Station as about 40 minutes by train and JR Otaru Station as about 1 hour 15 minutes by train.
It also gives bus times for comparison: about 1 hour 50 minutes to Sapporo Station and about 2 hours 30 minutes to Otaru Station. Its note says travel times may vary with transport conditions.
The bus counter for domestic flights and the transport information counter for international flights are both on the first floor of their terminal buildings. The airport's bus page lists a Niseko and Rusutsu ski bus at platform 12. It says ski buses run in winter only.
Route 1: JR via Otaru
JR Hokkaido's page on the airport train lists six trains an hour from the airport to Sapporo between 9:00 and 16:00. The fastest takes 33 minutes to Sapporo and 73 minutes to Otaru. Some trains run straight through to Otaru.
Key points from that JR Hokkaido page:
- Not every train from Sapporo goes on to Otaru. Trains bound for Teine or Hoshimi do not, so check the destination before you board.
- Reserved seats are in car 4 only. You need a basic fare ticket and a reserved seat ticket to sit there.
- For non-reserved seats you can tap through with an IC card such as Suica.
- If you are going toward Yoichi, Kutchan or Niseko, you must change at Otaru.
- IC cards such as Suica cannot be used beyond Otaru. JR Hokkaido asks you to buy a ticket in advance at your departure station.
Niseko Town's access page gives about 90 minutes from Chitose to Otaru via Sapporo, then about 120 minutes from Otaru to Niseko. It says trains are few, so watch your connection. Kutchan Town gives about 90 minutes from Otaru to Kutchan by local train.
Kutchan Town puts the whole trip from New Chitose Airport to Kutchan, via Sapporo and Otaru, at about 180 minutes. It adds that rapid trains can shift the time a little.
Route 2: the highway bus from Sapporo
The Chuo Bus Kosoku Niseko timetable we read listed departures from the Sapporo Ekimae stop at 8:35, 10:35 and 13:35. The 8:35 bus called at Otaru Ekimae at 9:44, Kutchan Jujigai at 11:03 and Niseko View Plaza at 11:22.
- One-way adult fares from Sapporo were 2,320 yen to Kutchan Jujigai and 2,560 yen to the Hondori stop in Niseko.
- You pay when you get off. IC cards can be used; touch the reader when you board and again when you get off.
- The page lists no rest stop. It lists a toilet, four-across reclining seats and free Wi-Fi on board.
- Large bags go in the luggage hold. Chuo Bus says it is not responsible for loss, theft or damage to items it holds there.
- When the bus is full, you may be offered a folding seat or asked to take the next bus.
Kutchan Town gives about 150 minutes from Sapporo to Kutchan by this route, and about 80 minutes from Otaru. It names Chuo Bus and Niseko Bus as the operators.
Route 3: the winter ski buses
Chuo Bus runs reservation-only ski buses on two lines: Chitose to Niseko and Sapporo to Niseko. When we checked, its page still showed last season's details. It said bookings for this season were planned for around October.
Last season's details, as a guide to what to expect:
- The buses ran from 13 December 2025 to 22 March 2026. You needed a reservation. Seats were not assigned, but numbers were capped at the booked total.
- From the airport, the timetable gave 3 hours 33 minutes to the Hirafu Welcome Center stop going out, and 2 hours 56 minutes to the Niseko Annupuri stop.
- Adult fares between the airport or Sapporo and the Niseko stops were 6,000 yen one way and 10,000 yen return. Child fares were half.
- Online booking closed at 18:00 the day before. Online payment was not offered, so you paid at a ticket counter on the day or in cash on the bus.
- You could not board wearing ski or snowboard boots. Skis and boards had to be in a case, and a sole cover was accepted.
- Chuo Bus warned that traffic or bad weather can delay the bus, so leave time for onward connections.
Niseko Bus's English page also lists this airport and Sapporo line for winter 2025, operated by Chuo Bus with reservations required.
If you plan to drive
Niseko Town gives about 120 minutes from Sapporo by National Route 230 over the Nakayama Pass. It gives about 120 minutes from Chitose by Route 276 over the Bifue Pass, and about 90 minutes from Otaru by Route 5.
Kutchan Town points drivers to the Kita no Michi Navi road information site for road conditions in Hokkaido. Check it before a winter drive.
What we could not verify, and therefore left out
- Current JR train times and fares between Otaru and Kutchan or Niseko. The only JR Hokkaido timetable we found for that line was dated June 2022.
- Ski bus dates, times and fares for the 2026–27 winter. Chuo Bus had not posted them when we checked.
- Private airport shuttles and taxis. We did not read an operator page for these that we could quote.
- The Hokkaido Shinkansen and routes from Hakodate, which are outside the scope of this guide.
